My first attempt to share - CWCI

By Kristen Chavez

Yesterday, I attended my first CWCI Meeting. The 55th meeting Annual Meeting of Members. What an experience.

A big thank you to Alex and Perla for inviting me to attend. It was a day filled with information and data! I love data. This was the meeting for that. It helped me understand our current state and what could be coming down the pipe for the CA system.

Started off with Navigating Legal Waterways: CWCI's Amicus Activities by Ellen Sims Langille, Esq.

She reviewed the cases that CWCI has had come through. Many of them to help make the system better.

Waves of Change: Post-Election Executive & Legislative Priorities by Jason Schmelzer and Jeremy Merz

Jason and Jeremy did a good presentation on the industry after the election. What did I take away. California's work comp industry is restlessness right now.

Unknown? What is going to happen? A new governor? Change?

One thought that was brought up - The politician thinks that workers' compensation should just work. It all depends on the team around them on what will change. The team that is around them know the system and why things are they way they are.

Next up was Who’s Rocking the Boat? Medical Service Delivery in Post-Reform Era Alex Swedlow and Rena David

What is causing the friction within the system right now?  What is stopping or delaying the injured workers from getting the medical care so that they are back to normal function and healthy.

What is the goal, standard & role of UR & IMR? Injured workers and providing them with quality care. Which is what it should be.

Taking the Helm: New Leadership Priorities by CA Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara
He took the time to address the meeting and gave us some insight to what he is planning to do. One thing that stuck out to me are his plans on doubling down on fraud.

What makes me wonder is that can you/we really stop the creative process of people that create fraud? It would be nice to think there is a way to stop or curve it but I feel that it comes down to thinking there is a get rich quick option or I will not be caught mentality.

Then we went on to a nice networking reception and I was able to catch up with many wonderful people and meet some new ones. I felt very warm and welcomed and that is one thing about our industry. How open everyone is and willing to talk with you and share their insights and help you out.

The day continued on with amazing presentations
Cross Currents IMR Insights by Stacy L. Jones, Charting the Course: Delivering Effective and Efficient Care by Dr. Kathryn Mueller and rounded the day with Alex Swedlow covering the Shifting Sands: Pharmacy Trends & Formulary Outcomes.

This was my attempt to share a few points from a great meeting. Read the actual article on WorkCompCentral https://goo.gl/FQPVkh
